Day 1 – Why WordPress

Welcome to Flothemes’ 7 days of WordPress course. This course aims to offer you an informative guide for getting started with a new WordPress site, covering topics ranging from why use WordPress, choosing hosting, themes, WordPress basics, how to add content, extending WordPress’ functionality with plugins and even some basics of SEO with WordPress.

In Day 1 we cover details on what is WordPress, and why you should use it for your business.

What is WordPress?

WordPress is a content management system (CMS). In fact it’s the most popular CMS platform on the planet, maybe even the universe? A CMS is basically a tool that allows you to add content on the web, and gives you a way to control that content easily.

WordPress offers both a self hosted option through WordPress.com and an option to install WordPress with your own hosting via WordPress.org (which is what we use here at Flothemes).

That may be a little confusing for some. Normally going for a self hosted version with WordPress.org is a better fit in the long run.

Why use WordPress?

WordPress is the worlds most popular content management system (CMS). It is an open sources project, meaning there are thousands of dedicated developers contributing to it every year and providing you with more tools and options to build a successful site. This makes it highly flexible, and with such a large user base, it can be extended with plugins and custom themes to really give you the options you need to build any site.

With WordPress there is no need for code knowledge. It’s built to get you started with a new site in no time. For those of you who are developers, it’s also a great platform to create something custom using child themes and by building your own plugins.

WordPress also offers the most robust platform out of the box for SEO. Plugins such as Yoast SEO offer an easy and simple solution to creating high indexing sites. But we will speak more about SEO later in this course.

With WordPress.org you can use a custom WordPress theme allowing you to create a more unique site than most other platforms. Flothemes offers a number of theme options that can be used to create powerful portfolio blog sites, giving you the best possible way to display your work.
